Washington is not only a glamorous actress, but is also a Phi Beta Kappa. She uses her sociology degree to research her roles in Scandal and Django Unchained. She said in an interview, “ I really love research. It’s one of the things I love most about my job.’’ Washington also understands her important role as a role model for Black women and African-American actresses. She hopes to write roles that are just as powerful as her Olivia Pope.
Washington also knows how to give back. She’s long been an advocate for women’s rights, participating in V-Day celebrations to combat violence against women. Washington also bravely spoke out in support of LGBT rights, saying, “We need to remember the moment that we say it’s okay to disenfranchise one segment of society, we’re opening the door to move backward on ourselves.” Though many celebrities speak out on political issues, for an African-American A-lister like Washington to confront a controversial issue in the Black community is refreshing.
She not only supports good causes, but knows how to deal with the fame monster. Washington keeps her private life, well, private.
